Delivering in Style!
The “velo” is the latest addition to the J&J fleet.
It is a human powered, recumbent bicycle, with a hard external shell. The shell is called “fairing” and is made from carbon fibre giving shelter from wind and rain.
Velos are extremely energy efficient. They can move quickly as they are very aerodynamic. Velos can cruise faster than racing bikes and the faired recumbent design is associated with the land speed record for Human Powered Vehicles (HPVs) which stands just over 140 kmh.
The J&J Vending Velo was manufactured in Holland and came to Ireland last October.
Its inaugural Irish journey was from Blackrock in Dublin to Pontoon in Mayo, and back, a journey of almost 500 km.This year, we have planned the following long-distance cycling events. Have a look at the routes; we may be coming to a place near you soon!
The Priests Leap and Devils Elbow starting in Killarney on April 29th
The Celtic Knot from Clara in Offaly on June 23rd
London-Edinburgh-London from London on July 30th
Velos have a number of advantages over traditional bikes:
- More comfortable cycling position as body weight is distributed over a bigger area
- Improved aerodynamics so moves four times more easily through the air
- Not slowed as much by the wind
- The outer shell keeps the cyclist warm in the winter
- The shell keeps the cyclist dry in the rain
- Velos have storage and carrying capacity – handy for snacks, drinks and chocolates 😉
- Faster and more energy efficient
- Better braking
- Stability of three wheels makes it safer from falls
- Coolest looking bike on the road
